Fantasy Baseball Dingers and Stingers: May 8

If you drafted Starling Marte, you're probably doing pretty well right now. (Credit)

Week two of "Dingers and Stingers" includes an early-season high draft pick who hasn't lived up to expectations. Shall we?

Manny Machado (3B BAL), 84% owned in Yahoo! – Machado’s been one of the hottest players in baseball lately. He’s now up to .314 with 5 homers, 21 RBI, 24 runs and 3 stolen bases. He’s batting in a very dangerous O’s lineup and bats second. He might regress a bit, but he will stay very productive the rest of the way with his potential. Do what you can to acquire him.

Jedd Gyorko (2B/3B SD), 30% owned in Yahoo! – Gyorko got off to a rough start this year, but he has turned it on lately. Over the past week, he’s hitting .370 with 3 homers and 6 RBI. He’ll be up and down all year since he’s a rookie, but his potential and multi-position eligibility are worth taking a chance on.

Starling Marte (OF PIT), 86% owned in Yahoo! – Marte has done it all this year. He hits homers, steals bases, and scores runs. He might be the fantasy steal of the year, because he went undrafted in several leagues. He’s batting .325 with 5 homers, 16 RBI, 24 runs and 10 stolen bases. He’s been one of the most valuable fantasy players in the entire league. He’s a rising star and needs to be owned in all leagues. He’s also worth trying to acquire through trade.

Marco Estrada (SP MIL), 57% owned in Yahoo! – Estrada has struggled mightily lately. He still has a nice strikeout-to-walk ratio, with 39 Ks and 12 walks. The problem is he has given up a whopping 11 home runs so far. He only gave up 18 all year in 2012. He needs to be benched or left on the waiver wire in all leagues right now until he figures it out.

Brett Anderson (SP OAK), 54% owned in Yahoo! – Anderson has found himself in a familiar place: the disabled list. He is hurt once again and was struggling before that. Maybe the DL will do him some good, because he has a 6.21 ERA. He’s worth stashing on the DL, because he has so much potential when he’s healthy. The problem is, he seems to never be healthy and can rarely be relied upon.

Elvis Andrus (SS TEX), 94% owned in Yahoo! – Andrus is valuable for his speed and getting on base, but he’s doing neither thus far. He’s been in a big slump all year and needs to be benched until he gets it going. Right now, I’d rather start: Asdrubal Cabrera, Jean Segura, Everth Cabrera, Alcides Escobar and Jed Lowrie. Shop Andrus and see what value you can get for him if somebody needs a shortstop. He’s overrated for fantasy and has proven it so far. He’s basically a one-category player and isn’t worth his price tag.
