The election of Donald Trump to the presidency has many celebrities considering running for office. Oscar De La Hoya has decided to add his name to that list.
In Las Vegas Tuesday to promote the middleweight rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Álvarez, he made his intentions clear. During a press conference he told reporters his reasoning for possibly running for the White House in 2020.
“If Arnold [Schwarzenegger] can be governor, if Trump can be president, then why can’t a Mexican-American who won an Olympic gold medal, who’s over 35 and a U.S. citizen run for president? That’s the beauty of our nation,” De La Hoya said via SI’s Emily Caron.
A face-off between De La Hoya and Trump would be interesting. Especially considering they have a contentious history. In 2016, The former boxer accused Trump of cheating in a game of golf. He would follow up his accusation by asking how a person who cheats in a friendly game could run the country. Trump, however, denied the two ever played gold despite a video proving him wrong.
When pressed further as to why he would run, De La Hoya said,”Because you can make a difference.“
