Manchester City are the champions of the Premier League. They won the title on 100 points while scoring 106 goals. They have yet to lose anybody of note during the summer transfer window. And now they’ve even added Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez to their side.
In other words, Pep Guardiola’s side is only getting stronger.
With the likes of Leroy Sané, Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling already in the side, we don’t know how much playing time Mahrez is going to get. Something tells us Guardiola is going to figure something out, but it’s too early to say. A cynical view points to Mahrez only making this move for financial purposes. Which, even if that is the main reason, good for him. That’s his right. But according to Agence France-Presse, it’s more than that.
“It’s a club who wants to win this type of trophy. The Champions League is for big clubs and Manchester City are a big club. They have everything to try to win the Champions League.”
Remember, Mahrez and Leicester City won the 2015-16 Premier League title in historic fashion. But they couldn’t finish the job in the UCL. That seems to be his mission now.
“It is a goal. Last season they lost in the quarter-final and I know they have the ambition to go further the next season. That’s why I’m here, why I made the decision to come here, because I want to be part of this.”
Last season, Mahrez found the back of the net 12 times while providing 11 assists. That was only good enough to see Leicester City finish ninth, still a modest spot for a club of their stature. But racking up just 47 points put them nowhere near Europe. Mahrez is talented enough to play for the bigger clubs.
Now he’s going to get his chance.
