José Mourinho is not a happy camper.
For the Premier League, today is deadline day. That means the transfer window shuts for all PL clubs before their season starts on Friday. Some clubs got right on this, getting their business done relatively early. One club specifically — Tottenham Hotspur — have yet to sign a single player.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s Mourinho won’t stop being negative. This shouldn’t surprise us, of course. After all, isn’t that his thing? The answer to that question is a resounding yes, but even this window feels a little different. The whining is louder, more pathetic. The attacks are sharper. And the window is closing…
United have just two new players to speak of ahead of the 2018-19 PL campaign. Yet both players — Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred and FC Porto’s Diogo Dalot — came before the World Cup. There’s been nothing since. All that money and nothing to show for it. Now, the Red Devils did finish second last season. They didn’t lose anyone important either, and that’s crucial.
But they did finish 19 points off the pace of Manchester City. In other words, United need to close that gap. They obviously aren’t the only club that has to, but they do have the most resources at their disposal to try and do so. Instead it looks like United fans shouldn’t expect anymore players this summer.
Via theScore’s Agence France-Presse, Mourinho says as much while speaking with reporters.
“The information I have is no,” Mourinho starts. “I’m not confident, I’m not confident and the market closes today so it is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed.”
On paper, United have a strong enough squad to deal with most PL teams. They need better fullbacks though. Failing to offload unwanted players is also a bit troubling.. But they also have more money than they apparently know what to do with. Why haven’t they been more active? Regardless, Mourinho is going to keep talking. Some of us will listen, others will zone out. It’s the same old song and dance.
At least the window closing gives him one less thing to talk about.
