Update from last week:
Desmond Jennings has cooled off, but he should still be counted on for power and speed. The Rays lineup has improved ever since Wil Myers got called up and should score more runs.
Marlon Byrd continues to stay hot in July. He has five homers and 19 RBI. The Mets may trade him at the deadline, but even if that happens, it should only help his fantasy situation. Ride the hot streak.
Wily Peralta was smoked by the Rockies last week, but has a favorable matchup against the Cubs this week.
Matt Cain rebounded with a quality start against the Cubs, but he needs to have a few more starts like that to be welcomed back to the “circle of trust.”
Suspensions for biogenesis should be announced within the next week so Nelson Cruz owners have to hold tight and see what happens. He continues to have a great year, but that could all be for nothing if he gets suspended.
Ryan Braun is out for the rest of the year, but keeper league owners should act now if he was dropped. Despite the travesty Braun committed, he should still produce next year.
Hanley Ramirez (3B, SS LAD) 96% owned in Yahoo! leagues – Ramirez has been on a tear since coming off the D.L. His stats in July are: .380, 5 HR, 16 RBI, 21 runs and 3 SB. The patience has paid off for owners that held on to him despite being out for a while. As long as he stays healthy he should continue to crush the ball.
Wil Myers (OF TB) 74% owned in Yahoo! leagues – Myers has been crushing the ball in July. He has seven homers, 17 RBI, 16 runs and four stolen bases. He will play the rest of the year in a suddenly dangerous Rays lineup. He’s a must-own and must-start in all leagues.
Chris Archer (SP TB) 57% owned in Yahoo! leagues – Archer has been untouchable in July. He has a 0.73 ERA in July with 22 K’s and seven walks. He also has two shutouts and two complete games. His rotation spot is secure for the rest of the year. Grab him immediately if he’s available.
Albert Pujols (1B LAA) 97% owned in Yahoo! leagues – Pujols was having a down season, but now he might miss the rest of the season with plantar fasciitis. Owners that took a chance on him early are now suffering. Capable replacements on the waiver wire are: Justin Morneau (56% owned) James Loney (55% owned), Chris Johnson (41% owned) and Yonder Alonso (11% owned).
Josh Johnson (SP TOR) 56% owned in Yahoo! leagues – Johnson has been struggling all year. He has a 7.71 ERA in July and things don’t look good the rest of the year. The beasts of the A.L. East are not going away and the Yankees’ lineup just got Alfonso Soriano back. He can be cut or benched for the time being. Replacements for Johnson include: Kyle Lohse (63% owned), Archer (56% owned), Scott Kazmir (19% owned) and Randall Delgado (5% owned).
Alex Rodriguez (3B NYY) 20% owned in Yahoo! leagues – “A-Rod” is facing a suspension through 2014. He wants to get back on the field, but the Yankees are doing everything possible to make sure that doesn’t happen before he’s eventually suspended. Even if he appeals the suspension, we have no idea if or when he will return this season. He’s not worth the headache. Cut your losses and move on.
