On a lean Monday slate, we’ve dug in and found a pair of southpaws that are worth your time. Check ’em out!
Aces in Isolation
LHP Alex Wood (LAD) versus Pittsburgh RHP Gerrit Cole
Wood has been excellent all season long. And after merely a good July (4.01 ERA), has been amazing in three August starts (1.89 ERA). It’s worth monitoring that his strikeout numbers have been a bit down of late–five or fewer in five of his last six starts–but he’s still inducing plenty of grounders. Another thing worth monitoring is his pitch count. He hasn’t thrown even 90 pitches in any start this month. And, has thrown 100 pitches just once all season. He’s still been absolutely incredible (2.30 ERA, 122-30 K/BB ratio in 117.1 innings), of course. He just hasn’t exactly been a horse.
Cole (4.04 ERA) hasn’t been awful this season, but he just doesn’t quite make the cut as an “ace.”
LHP Cole Hamels (TEX) versus Los Angeles LHP Tyler Skaggs
He hasn’t been vintage Hamels, but he’s been pretty darn good this season. He did miss a large portion of the season, but through 15 starts he’s got a 3.48 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and .219 BAA. Where he lags behind most is that he’s only gotten 62 strikeouts in 98.1 innings. That hasn’t improved a ton since he’s come off the disabled list either, as he’s fanned more than six batters Just once in his last 10 starts.
Skaggs isn’t half bad either, we just haven’t seen much of him this season. He missed most of the season with a severe oblique injury. But so far, he has posted a 3.63 ERA through eight starts with nearly a strikeout per inning.
