We don’t know Gerrit Cole is going to pitch next. But in the meantime, the hottest name on the free-agent market isn’t in a hurry. Reports indicate that J.D. Martinez is willing to wait until spring for a deal. That’s according to Jon Heyman, who reports Martinez will “hold out” until he receives what he feels to be fair market value.
Martinez, 30, now has Scott Boras as he agent. He’s reportedly seeking at least $180 million over six years, which is ever-so-slightly down from his initial $200 million asking price. Now despite only appearing in 119 games last season, Martinez would destroy opposing pitching. First there’s the triple-slash of .303/.376/.690. Then there’s the career-high 45 dingers.
The slugger is going to make one team very happy this offseason. But in the meantime, he’s in no rush. Then again, why should he be? After all, no other team this offseason appears to be in a rush to do anything of substance. There’s always tomorrow, though.
