Bryce Harper loves Philadelphia. But does he love it enough to join the Phillies this offseason? We don’t know. However, we do know now that the Phillies will be in on all the major free agents this offseason. Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, they’re keeping their eye on everyone.
“The Phillies, operating in the sweet spot of burgeoning local TV money and few existing contractual commitments, are expected to be a major player for Machado or Harper and the top starting pitcher in free agency, Patrick Corbin,” Rosenthal writes.
Should we expect them to land at least one of the three? Maybe not expect. But it’s clear that the Phillies are going to try to improve in a big way this offseason. After collapsing down the stretch this past season, it’s clear they need another piece or two to put together a full season. Adding the likes of Machado, Harper or Corbin would go a long way towards reaching the postseason next year.
But the market — this offseason anyway — is supposedly going to be a bit busier this time around. The Chicago Cubs will likely try to make a big free agent splash. After last offseason, maybe we shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss the Milwaukee Brewers. Additionally, the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are always going to want to spend big.
If the Phillies can take Harper away from Washington, though, that will certainly liven up the NL East next season. And Rosenthal is absolutely right when he says “In the baseball offseason, we live for the crazy.”
Will the Phils provide that for us?
