Is Tony Ferguson finally going to get his shot at Conor McGregor? It’s starting to look that way after all.
Since his defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather in August, fans have been eagerly awaiting what’s next for the Irishman. Would we finally see McGregor/Diaz III? Would McGregor keep boxing?
Well, it looks like we’re getting closer to our answer. Thursday, his striking coach Owen Roddy discussed why a fight with Ferguson makes the most sense:
“It’s exciting… When the word goes out like that, and people start talking about it, it’s usually not far off of the deal being done. It could be a good one. Ferguson is the interim champion and rightfully so…”
And while Roddy didn’t rule out another fight with Diaz, Ferguson/McGregor makes the most sense right now. UFC President Dana White said recently that it “has to happen.” After all, McGregor hasn’t defended his lightweight title since winning it last November. Ferguson, meanwhile, has become the interim lightweight champion.
So, how close are we to seeing this happen? Only time will tell. But two things seem certain. One, McGregor isn’t going back inside the boxing ring for a while.
And, he cannot avoid Tony Ferguson forever.
