This week’s episode of the Ultimate Fighter was a debate between Cody Garbrandt and Urijah Faber versus T.J. Dillashaw, as they rehash whether Dillashaw quit the team or got kicked out. It sounds like what happened was that Faber brought in Duane Ludwig as a coach, then Duane left (or got kicked out) to start a gym in Colorado. Dillashaw started splitting his time between both gyms before deciding the best thing to do to prepare for an upcoming fight was to train with Ludwig full time. He still wanted to go back and hang out at Team Alpha Male when not in fight camps.
This is actually not that uncommon of a scenario—athletes having to choose between loyalty to a team or doing what they think is best for their career. And butt-hurt is likely to follow. Whether or not Dillashaw quit or got an ultimatum and got kicked off the team because of his decision to do his full fight camp at Ludwig’s doesn’t seem to be the real issue.
After the bickerfest, we get to learn a bit about Eddie Gordon and Tom Gallicchio. Gordon won season 19 of TUF, but didn’t do so well in the UFC afterwards. After three losses, he was cut, hence the need for redemption. Tom Gallicchio lost to Marcin Wrzosek in his fight. We also get to see Gallicchio’s candy vending machine business and Gordon’s weight loss coffee business. (Gordon gets to work from home and watch his kids, which is a pretty cool deal). We get to see Dillashaw visit the house and help Gallicchio prep before his fight. So, he may win the PR war yet.
Finally, it’s time for the fight. It’s an old cliché but this really does look like it’s going to be a classic striker versus grappler matchup. Gordon’s hands look steady as he lands some hard rights, with Gallicchio trying and failing to clinch, eating some shots in the process. Gallicchio lands a single-leg takedown. Gordon stands, and Gallicchio takes his back, working a neck crank into a rear-naked choke. Instead of fighting his hands, Gordon works for Gallicchio’s feet, essentially giving him the rear-naked choke.
Next week we’ll have Jesse Taylor up against Mehdi Baghdad.
