With the first overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns would select Heisman-winning quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Of course, for weeks leading up to the draft, many would compare Manziel to another Browns’ quarterback: Johnny Manziel. But here’s the thing: similarities between the two are scarce. In fact, let’s break them down right now!
- They are both Heisman trophy winners.
- Each play the quarterback position.
- The Browns drafted them.
End of list.
The only reason people continue comparing these two is because of Mayfield’s perceived attitude problem. So let’s address. Sure, there are multiple examples of Mayfield going a bit too far on the football field with his antics. He’s definitely confident, maybe even sometimes a bit cocky. But if you want to be the best, you have to believe you are the best. And that’s exactly what the former Oklahoma Sooner believes. However, here is a list of things Mayfield doesn’t do that Manziel has/does.
- Baker doesn’t/didn’t have a drinking problem.
- Mayfield doesn’t hit women.
- Don’t expect Mayfield to blame the team that drafted him if he turns out to be a bad NFL quarterback.
“For me, I’m here right now because I have been myself. Johnny and I are two completely different people. That is nothing against him, but what I have been able to do is be able to be up front and honest about who I am during these meetings. I’m confident that I have shown that with this coaching staff and with the management and throughout the process. For me, moving forward, it is just being myself. I am not going to go out and try to prove that I am not Johnny. I am going to be myself. To me, that is going to take care of the rest.”
So let’s all stop being lazy, okay? And if you think you’re going to drag Browns’ GM John Dorsey into this, you’ve got another thing coming. He knows how hard Mayfield works.
“The one thing I really love is when you talk to the Oklahoma staff, when he gets to Oklahoma, he begins to learn the play book in three days. He loves the game of football. He loves to study the game of football. I have no qualms about this man whatsoever, as a man or as a football player. I think he is a really good person.”
There you have it.
