Donald Trump has given the NFL and NFLPA a truce point in the national anthem debate. That’s because his latest speech has him hitting owners where it hurts — their bottom line.
According to NJ.com, here’s what Trump had to say about the new anthem policy in the NFL.
“Look, I don’t want to cause controversy. . . . But how about they pass this stupid thing. You don’t have to do this anymore. If you don’t respect the flag, or if you don’t like the country, or whatever it is. Just go into the locker room. . . . I think in many respects, that’s worse. Isn’t that worse than not standing? I think that’s worse. . . . I actually think in many ways it’s worse.”
Now Donald Trump has stooped to mocking the NFL brand. In doing so, he looks petty and shouldn’t be taken seriously. It’s because he’s attacking the brand he went after a long time ago, and he finally sees an opportunity to exact revenge for them making him look stupid.
Back in the 1980s, Trump tried to create a new league called the United States Football League (USFL). He went head-to-head with the NFL and won, but really lost.
The USFL sued the NFL for $1.2 billion in damages claiming that the NFL tried to keep the USFL off of major networks like ABC, NBC, and CBS. However, a jury ruled that while the NFL had done do wrong in the television aspect, the harm of what amounted to what is basically a monopoly on football in the US was worth something, and basically the mismanagement of the USFL was to blame for their financial misfortune. They awarded the USFL one dollar in damages — which became three dollars under antitrust laws. By the time the check was paid out, there was 76¢ in interest, which means the USFL was awarded $3.76.
For more than 30 years, Trump has held a grudge. First for the calamity that was the lawsuit, and second because he’s not allowed to be an owner of an NFL franchise. They basically don’t allow him in their club. Therefore, he’s doing everything to tear down that club.
What Trump is doing in shrewd politics. He’s hiding behind patriotism to get revenge on the league that turned a $1.2 billion lawsuit into a $-3.76 victory and made him look silly in the process.
He’s trying to tear down the NFL, and it’s unbecoming of a sitting President. The fans who were at the political rally cheering on Trump need to see through this charade. It’s nothing more than trying to get even, and he’s using the office of President of the United States to do so. It’s a shame.
