The Green Bay Packers are already having their most interesting offseason in over a decade. Dom Capers is no longer their defensive coordinator. Ted Thompson is transitioning into a made-up senior adviser role. But now, recent reports indicate head coach Mike McCarthy has already signed a one-year extension.
But here’s the catch: he did so in season.

So, there’s that.
The Packers are coming off their first losing season since 2008, when they finished 6-10. That’s also the last time they missed the postseason. Plenty of that can be chalked up to Aaron Rodgers breaking his collarbone. However, the defense has been an issue for years now.
Plus, it’s not as though this extension guarantees McCarthy’s future in Green Bay. A new GM could very well decide to fire him anyway. But for the first time in a while, things are interesting in Green Bay. We’ll find out soon enough whether that’s for better or worse.
Should McCarthy be the head coach of this team going forward? Or, is it time to think about other options. Keep in mind, however, that sure things are few and far between in the NFL. There are no guarantees. But it starts at the top, where there hasn’t been much change for a while.
Buckle up, Packers fans.
