The long wait is just about over, Philadelphia Eagles fans. Carson Wentz is set to return next week. Sunday morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter would report the following:
“Eagles’ QB Carson Wentz still needs final medical clearance, but he is on track to return next Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, per league sources.”
Wentz, of course, has been out since suffering the season-ending knee injury last season. In the meantime, Nick Foles has been doing a steady job filling in. Foles would guide them to their first-ever championship in February, but his time is almost up. A rough preseason and a slow start to the regular season opens the door for Wentz.
Then again, this isn’t a surprise to anyone. The Eagles belong to Wentz. But it’s smart that Philadelphia has been taking their time in not rushing him back. After all, why would you rush the face of the franchise? As of this writing, the Eagles are down 0-7 to the Tampa Buccaneers. Foles didn’t play well last week in a rough but ultimately successful showing against the Atlanta Falcons. And it’s time to give the team back over to the rightful man.
After a tough rookie campaign, Wentz took a tremendous step forward in 2017 — 60.2% completion rate, 3,296 yards, 33 TDs, a league-leading 7.5% touchdown rate and only seven interceptions. Oh, and that’s in just 13 games. The season before, he threw for just 16 touchdowns but a staggering 14 interceptions over a full 16-game slate.
Eagles fans will be hoping for more of the former upon his return. Philadelphia takes on Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts next Sunday.
