The transfer window has shut for the Premier League, and it’s been an interesting one for Chelsea.
First, the bad news. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois plays for Real Madrid now. Yet there’s a big nugget of good news in there. Mateo Kovačić is going the other way in a loan deal. Add earlier arrival Jorginho to that mix, and Maurizio Sarri’s midfield could be devastating.
Still, losing Courtois meant bringing in a replacement became a necessity. On the surface, Chelsea didn’t have too much time to act. Something tells us though that Courtois’ exit had been set for a couple of weeks. The language of Kovačić’s loan deal probably needed a little more hammering out.
That doesn’t change the fact that Chelsea went out and broke the record fee in signing Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. €80 million is A LOT, and it’s a record for a goalkeeper move. The previous record belonged to Roma’s Allison, who just made a move to Liverpool last month.
Per the club’s website, Kepa is ready to go.
“So many things attracted me to the club, all the titles the club has won, the other players, the city, the English Premier League. It’s an accumulation of things, and I am very glad Chelsea has decided to trust me and to take me in as well.”
Kepa immediately steps in as Chelsea’s No. 1. At 23 years old, he could be in for a long stint. Meanwhile, the Blues don’t have to worry about the Champions League this season. The season should be easier on them as a result. He will be expected to get back into the Champions League, but Chelsea should frustrate plenty of opponents along the way.
The club still has to be careful as to not lose anymore key players before the end of the month. PL teams can no longer buy, but they can sell. And rumors have been swirling around a couple of key names for quite a while.
Will anyone else move?
