It’s difficult to oversell just how great UFC 217 would end up being. We had the triumphant return of Georges St-Pierre, capping off an already wild night. We had TJ Dillashaw reclaiming his bantamweight crown.
But nothing compares to Rose Namajunas capturing the women’s strawweight title from Joanna Jędrzejczyk. By making her submit to strikes, no less. Nothing. Oh, in the opening round as well.
Jędrzejczyk would enter the evening with a 14-0 record. Not only that, but the UFC star was a -600 betting favorite over Namajunas. That’s how lopsided this was supposed to be.
Then just after three minutes into Round 1, Namajunas pulled it off. Again—with strikes. Not by utilizing her advantage on the ground. So, what’s next for the new champion? Time will tell.
In the meantime, UFC 217 gave fight fans plenty to enjoy.
